Best way of preparing "false wood before staining?
I have a door that I would like to color several shades darker (a mahogany or walnut). It is probably plywood as opposed to real wood (the door sounds hollow). Will wood stain even "take" correctly in this type of surface? (I tried sanding white spirit and a Offcut – the results were so-so.) other preparations? Any other primer or coat? Should I use wood instead of paint (which tends to look too bright, my only problem – can not seem to find versions mate.) Thoughts or advice?
Hello Bowzer: try sanding a coat of shellac diluted with alcohol. Use 1 part shellac to 2 parts alcohol. brush on liberally, let it soak into the wood, then wipe with a cotton cloth. Let this dry overnight, then sand lightly. wipe again with a clean dry cloth, then blot. absorb the lacquer on the softer portions of the wood, then seal. When stained, stain more evenly. I'm very surprised that you can not find matte painting. Has asked your local paint dealer for a matte finish for painting of wood?
