Can I use pieces of wood panel unit impressions?
I have a lot (about 100 or so) several pieces of pine wood leftovers from a project at work. They are soft soft pine, Ic I was wondering if using these for printing block? I've heard of this, but I tried to print something and went to look pretty strange, not without problems. I only made prints with linoleum store, is there a different way of using wood for the blocks? Do I need to sand or something first? They are fairly smooth it is. I would use this as it would be worlds cheaper than buying blocks … I use my cutters on wood or linen should be used exclusively for woodworking tools? Any advice on making wooden blocks would be appreciated. Know all good sites? Thank you!
Wood processing is absolutely essential. Choose a board flat and smooth, without nodes. Sand 3 times from heavy grade, intermediate, then fine-grained. Draw your design on the wood then varnished. After drying varnish or lacquer, smooth with steel wool then apply a second layer. Then cut clean and maintain your size. The wood becomes a beautiful work of art. Now on the quality of its timber. The pine is soft and has large veins make it difficult to carve, but can use it. Keep your tools sharp. Hardest woods soft grain such as cherry are better. I got junk left over from a specialty sawmill at a discount price. You can also use a good grade of plywood. The end grain is best for engraving, but may cost more. I love doing impressions in this way, but have little time and have gotten a little rusty on this, but I hope this helps. Personally I think you need wood carving tools. Also I use a Dremel tool, but Wear goggles.
